Winter Storm Advisory - Cont.

It's hard to tell exactly how much snow we got because of the freezing rain, but it's enough. The freezing rain continues, and we only have some small branches down, but I am sure there will be more. This much snow at one time is a rare site in central Tennessee, and there are no snow removal companies. I'm not sure I've even seen a snow blower for sale here. Yesterday, DH bought a snow shovel. I'm not sure how much use he'll put it to today with the ice.

The pictures are taken from almost the same angle. Click on them for more detail.  The bottom one was taken this morning. Yes, it is that gray out there. Have I said how much I detest snow?

One really bizarre site yesterday was a man in a T-Bird convertible WITH THE TOP DOWN in the snow storm.

Being Prepared.

I am sitting here, making a list of anything we might possibly need in the next 48 hours. You see, we are expecting 1-4" of snow.

Yeah, I know we were born and raised in Michigan and that 1-4" of snow is nothing. But that type of snowfall closes schools here. Really, anything over a dusting closes schools here. If you saw some of the roads the school buses run on, you wouldn't want to drive them dry, let alone when there is a dusting of snow. And those are the roads that the county uses salt on - liberally.

Sure, drivers in Michigan are nuts, but we are talking Tennessee here and they can give Michigan drivers lessons when it relates to stupid driving habits.

So DH and I will join the hordes at the grocery store picking the shelves bare like starving people. Doesn't that sound like fun?

Snow Day!

I remember as a kid waiting for a snow day. I think I can remember maybe 3 total. Kids here in mid-Tennessee get a snow day when it threatens to snow.

So last night we got an inch of snow, and school was cancelled for today. This is the second time school has been cancelled for weather reasons this term. This is actually the first real snow day as we got a whole inch of the white stuff. It is rapidly melting and dropping from trees, and I can now see the green grass below it.

When school is called off because of weather, the first place to really feel it is the grocery stores. Everyone feels it is necessary to rush into Kroger, Walmart, and Food Lion to clear the shelves because they might be stuck in the house for four hours or so. It is un-freakin-believable! And so laughable to someone from Michigan.

I have to go now and restrain DH from going out and actually buying a snow shovel. At least he has given up trying to convince me we need a snow blower!

Swimming Lessons

First, I have to say that I am extremely grateful for the rain. We have been in drought conditions here in Tennessee for a couple of years, so every bit of rain that we do get is welcome.

Second, I am extremely grateful that we are not getting snow. The four inches of rain we've had this week would have been well over a three feet of snow. BUT, I am not ready for our side yard to fill up with water either! But, if it would freeze, we'd have a killer skating rink. Er, I think I donated my ice skates to Salvation Army.

Last, the top picture was taken about 6:30 pm CST, the other around noon today. What a difference a few hours makes, eh?
